Special Issue of Frontiers in Marine Science: OceanObs19: An Ocean of Opportunity

The ocean observing community has been hard at work writing and reviewing community white papers aimed at addressing the key issues and future decadal goals of ocean observing. These peer-reviewed articles are being published in a special issue of Frontiers in Marine Science under the topic OceanObs19: An Ocean of Opportunity. Out of the 140 papers currently published or under review for this special issue, 63 of them have contributions from OOMD team members or affiliated PI authors, with 16 of them being lead authors.

OOMD OceanObs’19 Conference Engagement

The Ocean Observing and Monitoring Division team will be attending the OceanObs'19 Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii during the week of September 16-20, 2019. OOMD Director, David Legler is an invited panelist for two sessions: “A sustainable fit-for-purpose ocean observing system” and “Climate Variability and Change” and he will be part of the concluding OceanObs'19 Plenary “Sponsors” Panel, representing US federal interests. The OOMD team has been working with IOOS (NOS) to plan NOAA’s Special Session, An Ocean of Data: NOAA’s Role in Marine Extreme Events and Hazards which will include a panel with leadership from OAR, NOS, NESDIS, NMFS, and NWS, including AA McLean. Dr. Neil Jacobs will deliver opening remarks. OOMD and IOOS will be managing the NOAA Booth in the Exhibition Hall, which will feature Lightning Talks and a special event to celebrate 10 years of ocean exploring on the Okeanos Ship (AA McLean will deliver remarks). The OOMD team is organizing and sponsoring a number of additional events during the conference. OOMD is also well represented in the upcoming special issue of Frontiers in Marine Science titled, OceanObs19: An Ocean of Opportunity; 63 of the 140 papers currently published or under review include contributions from OOMD team members or affiliated PI authors, with 16 of them being lead authors.

Accepted for publication: Biogeochemical anomalies at two southern California Current System moorings during the 2014‐16 Warm Anomaly‐El Niño sequence

Available online 6 September 2019

The 2014‐16 Pacific Warm Anomaly‐El Niño sequence significantly changed ocean conditions in the California Current System (CCS), but impacts of these anomalies on nutrients, chlorophyll‐a, and pH, and comparisons to past El Niño events, have not been well described. We examined nine years (2010‐2018) of data from two ocean moorings that provide hourly measurements at fixed locations in the southern CCS, allowing us to determine both sub‐seasonal and multi‐year ecosystem changes.

OWAQ submits Radar Follow on Report

OWAQ in collaboration with NSSL and the NWS Office of Observations has submitted for clearance the  Report to Congress titled ” WEATHER RADAR FOLLOW-ON PLAN:

Research and Risk Reduction to Inform Acquisition Decisions”.

The report articulates NOAA's strategy for recapitalizing the NEXRAD system in the 2030-2040 time frame with an estimated cost of $6 billion. Scenarios covered include: 1) a second Service Life Extension Program; 2) acquisition of a center-fed parabolic antenna system (similar to NEXRAD technology; and 3) Phased Array Radar (PAR).

GSD/CIRES/CIRA researchers to present at the Developmental Testbed Center annual Science Advisory Board meeting

September 19-20: Researchers from GSD, CIRES, and CIRA will present research progress at the annual Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) Science Advisory Board Meeting. The DTC is a distributed facility where the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) community can test and evaluate new models and techniques for use in research and operations. The DTC is a NOAA/NCAR collaboration, and the board is made of members of the U.S. NWP community including GSD's Curtis Alexander.

GSD and CIRES researchers will attend and present at the Developmental Testbed Center Science Advisory Board Meeting

September 19-20
GSD and CIRES scientists will present Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) activities for the annual DTC Science Advisory Board SAB Meeting. The DTC is a distributed NOAA/NCAR facility where the numerical weather prediction community can test and evaluate new models and techniques for use in research and development. The board is made up of numerical weather prediction experts from the U.S. and guides the future path of DTC activities. GSD's Curtis Alexander is a member of the SAB.
