Selection comes with up to $37 million award over five years
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration today announced it has selected Oregon State University to host NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Marine Ecosystem and Resources Studies (CIMERS).
The mission of this cooperative institute is to provide new solutions-oriented knowledge to address the challenges of a rapidly changing ocean, and expanding demands on ocean, uses through collaborative research and training partnerships that accelerate innovations and equity in ocean science and management.
“We are excited to announce that Oregon State University will host our new Cooperative Institute for Marine Ecosystem and Resources Studies,” said Craig McLean, assistant NOAA administrator for Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. “This institute brings together talented researchers who will help NOAA advance our mission to better understand the ocean, climate, weather and fisheries, which depend on research, data and information to make sound decisions for healthy ecosystems, communities and a strong blue economy.”
NOAA to award OSU up to $37 million over five years
The selection comes with an award of up to $37 million over the course of five years, with the potential for renewal for another five years based on successful performance. NOAA selected Oregon State University after an open, competitive evaluation.
The new cooperative institute will continue to address some of the major research themes that have been the focus of NOAA’s previous cooperative institute hosted by OSU, the Cooperative Institute for Marine Resources Studies, as well as expand to include new research areas. The four research themes include: (1) conservation, protection, and restoration of marine resources, (2) marine ecosystems, (3) ocean acoustics, and (4) ocean, coastal, and seafloor processes.
NOAA supports 20 cooperative institutes consisting of 70 universities and research institutions in 28 states and the District of Columbia. These research institutions provide strong educational programs that promote student and postdoctoral scientist involvement in NOAA-funded research.
