Great Lakes ice cover most extensive since 1996*

Relative to 1973, annual ice maximum ice cover on the Great Lakes has declined by 71 percent through 2010. This winter, though, the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) reported that 88 percent of the surface of the Great Lakes frozen was of mid-February.
