NOAA seeks new members for Ocean Exploration Advisory Board, welcomes others

NOAA is seeking up to two new members for its Ocean Exploration Advisory Board, a federal advisory committee that advises the NOAA administrator on matters pertaining to ocean exploration. The panel advises NOAA on strategic planning, exploration priorities, competitive ocean exploration grant programs and other matters as requested.

Applicants should demonstrate expertise and experience in areas that include scientific research relevant to ocean exploration, ocean engineering, data science, deep-ocean biology, geology, oceanography, marine archaeology or ocean-science education and communications. NOAA will give particular consideration to applications from Indigenous, tribal, Native American, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian stakeholders from the Alaska or Pacific Ocean basin regions. Individuals with expertise in other NOAA ocean exploration areas and representatives of other federal agencies involved in ocean exploration are also encouraged to apply.

The application deadline has been extended. Applications are now due by November 18, 2022. For information on the Ocean Exploration Advisory Board and how to apply, see the new Federal Register notice.

Board members selected under this solicitation will join 11 other members, including 6 new members. Invited to join the board by NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad on August 1, 2022, these new members bring a wealth of valuable experience to the OEAB. Pictured right to left below, they are:

  • Peter Girguis, Ph. D., Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University
  • Kevin Hand, Ph. D., Director, Ocean Worlds Lab, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
  • Veronique Le Roux, Ph. D., Associate Scientist, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
  • Mark Moline, Ph. D., Director, School of Marine Science and Policy, University of Delaware
  • Frank Muller-Karger, Ph.D., Professor of Biological Oceanography and Remote Sensing, College of Marine Science, University of South Florida
