Connecting science and society for a better tomorrow: Catch NOAA Research at the 2022 Ocean Sciences Meeting

Scientists are coming together to improve collaboration and inclusivity across the ocean science community at the 2022 Ocean Sciences Meeting OSM. Taking place February 24 – March 4, 2022, OSM will bring NOAA scientists together with ocean stakeholders to advance progress towards the U.S. and global goals of safeguarding human health, tackling climate change, ensuring coastal resilience, and promoting economic prosperity.  A walk along the coast. A seafood dinner. A drop of rain in your garden. What is your connection to the ocean? And how does ocean science enhance your life? With observations from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun, NOAA is working to improve our understanding and knowledge of the ocean through ocean exploration, observation, and mapping, gathering data and information for many sectors that depend on the marine economy: seaports and shipping, tourism in coastal communities, energy and infrastructure, and more. The meeting will also showcase engagement and achievements from the first year of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 and highlight how ocean science can provide solutions for a better tomorrow.  NOAA Research engagement at OSM includes: A showcase of U.S. efforts to leverage the linkages between science, sustainable development, and establish networks for the Ocean Decade. This town hall will include representatives from the U.S. National Committee, the first U.S.-based Decade Collaborative Center, the U.S. NGO Consortia, and the U.S. Youth Advisory Council. This will be moderated by Adam Bloomquist from the State Department.  A globally-focused town hall focused on inclusivity and collaboration across the nations and sectors to achieve the seven societal outcomes of the Ocean Decade. Moderated by NOAA Research Assistant Administrator Craig McLean.  A town hall and interactive workshop on the challenges and barriers to successful collaboration across the government, non profit and academic partners in ocean science. NOAA Research Assistant Administrator Craig McLean will provide remarks.  An interactive workshop focused on lessons learned in Ocean Decade communications for a campaign that is globally inclusive yet regionally focused on generating behavior change, and how anyone can collaborate on the Global Stakeholder Forum and participate in Generation Ocean. Lead by Carlie Wiener from Schmidt Ocean Institute and Claire Montgomery, NOAA Research Communications.  A forum enabling interaction between early career ocean professionals ECOPs and leading academic and industry providers to foster the next generation of the Ocean Decade workforce.  A Town Hall on the “New Blue Economy,” looking to the sea for data and information to address societal challenges and inspire solutions to improve sustainable use of the ocean and its resources. Lead by Carl Gouldman, Director of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System IOOS program.  A session co-hosted by NOAA Ocean Exploration and the Consortium for Ocean Leadership identifying areas for collaboration, partnerships, and a Community of Practice in ocean exploration. A town hall by NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory considering technologies for marine carbon dioxide removal. DOC-sponsored session discussing challenges and examples in sharing Commerce data for a knowledge-based Blue Economy. Want to learn more?
